1990 Milk Race combined classification jersey with his Milk Race number signed by Malcolm Elliott

This jersey is one Malcolm Elliott was awarded during the 1990 Milk Race. Elliott won the race overall, taking his second victory in the UK’s national stage race. The combined classification is rarely seen in stage races now, but it came from the Tour de France and was introduced for the 1968 race. It was awarded to the best rider in the three main standings; the overall, the mountains and the points competition.

It lasted in the Tour from 1968 until 1989, missing four years in between. More often (eight out of 15 times) the jersey was won by the yellow jersey winner, so it was seen as a pointless competition and abandoned.

Other races stuck to the combined classification. Pro riders were often paid for each day they wore the jersey, and there would be a paid classification at the end of the race, so it was good for the rider’s earnings.

This genuine leader’s jersey worn by Malcolm Elliott is offered with his number from the Milk Race, which he has signed. Elliott was one of the leading British professionals of the 1980s and 90s. He finished the Tour de France in 1987 and 1988 and won the points jersey in the 1989 Vuelta a España, as well as three stage in 1988 and 1989. He was British road race champion in 1993.
